1. Try re-installing the storage device. It may take longer for ER310 to detect the storage device if there are too many files in the disk.
2. Format your storage device to NTFS file system on PC. We recommend using "HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool"

ER310 does NOT support USB Hubs, card readers, FAT format, NAS, and devices with more than 2TB capacity.

Please confirm whether your hard drive has encryption or not. Kindly note that ER130/ER310/C285/CR530 only supports MBR (master boot record) partition table, the encrypted hard drives however use GPT (GUID partition table).
The solution in this case is changing partition table format of hard drive from GPT to MBR.
You may refer to following link:
http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/26203-convert-gpt-disk-mbr-disk.html
Please make sure to format your Storage device into NTFS file format and MBR (master boot record) partition table. Note: FAT32 and GPT (GUID partition table that used by encrypted hard drives) are not supported. We recommend using "AOMEI Partition Assistant tool"

With AOMEI Partition Assistant tool you will be able to confirm whether your hard drive is in MBR or GPT partition table and it will show NTFS or FAT32 after checking your hard drive's file system.
AOMEI
